The NPR-designated “best party band in years” performs at the Somerville Theatre on May 1.
Global Arts Live presents Red Baraat on Thursday, May 1, 8 p.m. at the Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.
From Brooklyn, Red Baraat merges hard-driving North Indian bhangra with elements of hip-hop, funk, jazz and raw punk energy. Delivering an explosion of sound, the band is particularly known and loved for its unforgettable live performances. This year Red Baraat hits North American stages in support of their recent album, Bhangra Rangeela.
The ever-evolving Red Baraat is a pioneering band from Brooklyn, led by dhol player Sunny Jain. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve.
Red Baraat has released seven albums including the 2018 release Sound The People, which NPR’s All Songs Considered called “wildly infectious, soul-grooving music,” while Stereogum exclaimed “Red Baraat delivers an explosion of sound.” Prior albums include 2017’s Bhangra Pirates (No. 4 on World Music Charts Europe), 2013’s Shruggy Ji (which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard World Music Charts), and their debut release in 2010, Chaal Baby, which was featured on the FX TV show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Their beloved live show has crisscrossed the globe including stops at Bonnaroo, Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD Festivals (in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Spain), Austin City Limits, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Luxembourg Philharmonic, New York City’s iconic Bowery Ballroom, Rudolstadt Festival in Germany, and Vienna Concert House. The band has performed at the request of The White House (during President Obama’s term), TED and the Olympic Games.
