Vibraphonist and composer Warren Wolf leads an all-star band on his upcoming album Convergence, which will be released via Mack Avenue Records on June 10.
The band features bassist Christian McBride, drummer Jeff “Train” Watts and pianist Brad Mehldau. Guitarist John Scofield is also a featured soloist on two of the album’s tracks.
McBride, who has had Wolf as a member of his Inside Straight quintet since 2007, produced the album. He was also responsible for bringing the band together. “I wanted to see how far he could go. It was a particular pleasure to bring Warren together with John Scofield and Brad Mehldau – two musicians he’d never worked with before,” he explained.
Convergence is comprised of a variety of different styles, from funky soul-jazz to post-bop burners. Along with Wolf’s original compositions, its tracklist features versions of such tunes as Stevie Wonder’s “Knocks Me Off Of My Feet,” Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust,” and Chopin’s “The Minute Waltz.”
“I like to show that there’s always another side to Warren Wolf,” said the vibraphonist. “I’m not just Warren Wolf the jazz musician who went to the Berklee College of Music and studied bebop, I’m Warren Wolf the musician who actually knows a lot of music from bebop to pop music, Motown, fusion and classical.”
