Vinyl is back! Each month on “Vinyl Watch,” we list some of the most noteworthy new vinyl releases — including new albums, reissues, special-edition box sets and more. At JAZZIZ, we share the vinyl community’s appreciation of the experience of collecting and playing vinyl records. Amy Winehouse, 12×7: The Singles Collection (UMe/Island)
12×7: The Singles Collection is a 7″ singles box set comprising all of Amy Winehouse’s memorable singles from the Frank (2003), Back To Black (2006) and Lioness: Hidden Treasures (2011) albums. Featured tracks include “Stronger Than Me,” “Rehab,” “Love Is a Losing Game” and her GRAMMY-winning “Body and Soul” duet with Tony Bennett. Each single will be housed in an individual picture sleeve and pressed on black vinyl. The deluxe box set also features a 20-page lyrics booklet and a set of art cards.
Various Artists, The Gospel Truth: The Complete Singles Collection (Craft)
Craft has released The Gospel Truth: The Complete Singles Collection, a brand new, comprehensive compilation highlighting The Gospel Truth Records, an imprint of the legendary soul label Stax. The set includes all 17 singles and their respective B-sides, issued by the imprint between 1972 and 1974, and marks the culmination of Craft’s six-month campaign celebrating the legacy of Stax. Along with this vinyl set, The Gospel Truth is available digitally and on CD.
Nina Simone, I Put a Spell on You / Pastel Blues (Verve/UMe)
Verve/UMe has released Nina Simone’s classic 1965 Philips albums, I Put a Spell on You and Pastel Blues. Both have been reissued as audiophile-grade vinyl and as part of Verve/UMe’s recently launched series, Acoustic Sounds. They follow last month’s reissues of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme (1965) and Ballads (1963). All vinyl in the series is remastered from original analog tapes and presented in high-quality packaging.
Avishai Cohen, The 50 Gold Selection Vinyl Box Set (RadazRecordz/naïve)
Bassist/composer Avishai Cohen celebrates his 50th birthday with a brand new vinyl collection of his most popular songs chosen by fans through a 2019 fan survey. The songs are collected in The 50 Gold Selection Box Set, a limited-edition 6-LP vinyl box set, which also includes a 32-page hardcover book with notes written personally by Cohen, rare photos, a special poster and other exclusive content.
Various Artists, Verve Wishes You a Swinging Christmas (Verve/UMe)
This holiday season, Verve/UMe has boxes up some of its most classic holiday titles in a new vinyl box collection titled Verve Wishes You a Swinging Christmas. The set is headed by Ella Fitzgerald’s Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas (1960), celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. It also features three stellar instrumental albums: Kenny Burrell’s Have Yourself a Soulful Little Christmas (1966), Ramsey Lewis’ Sound of Christmas (1961) and Jimmy Smith’s Christmas ’64 (1964). All four records are presented in their original packaging.
