Craft Recordings will be reissuing pianist Thelonious Monk and saxophonist John Coltrane’s Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings as a deluxe 3-LP vinyl edition box set on June 9.
The release documents Monk and Coltrane’s collaboration during their sessions at New York City’s Five Spot Café, where they played every night between April and July 1957. Coltrane once stated that “working with Monk brought me close to a musical architect of the highest order. I learned from him in every way.”
The collection includes other stellar performers, such as drummer Art Blakey, saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, and trumpeter Ray Copeland. It was remastered from original analog sources and released in hi-res digital format. The box set also features new artwork, rare photos and an essay by the jazz writer and producer of the original sessions Orrin Keepnews.
