Song of the Day: Röyksopp, “Eple”

“Eple” is a 2003 song by Norwegian electronica Röyksopp, formed by Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland. It was also the second single from their Melody A.M. album, released that same year. It became quite popular and has appeared on several TV shows and commercials since its original release. The title of the song comes from the Norwegian word for apple. This is a reference to the cover art of Bob James’ Two from 1975, which depicts a golden hand holding an apple. That album contains “You’re as Right as Rain,” the song Röyksopp sampled and that “Eple” is mainly based on.

In a recent video, the great jazz pianist/keyboardist praised Röyksopp creative use of this sample, saying: “All I can maybe even remotely take credit for is that a lot of my electric piano melodies during that time stuck out a lot. But, whoever this artist is, just took the very simple essence of that and made it into something completely different and I love the groove that they came up with. Very fun.”
