German-born, New York-based guitarist and composer Philip Weberndoerfer makes an impact with his latest album, Tides.
Philip Weberndoerfer, a German-born guitarist and composer, is celebrated for his visionary approach and creative resourcefulness. Since moving to New York in 2016, he has made a steady impact on the jazz scene as both a bandleader and sideman, performing at prestigious venues across the city. He has also represented Germany at the Blue Note Jazz Festival in collaboration with the German Consulate General. Throughout his career, Philip has collaborated with esteemed artists such as Onaje Allan Gumbs, Chuck McPherson, and Alexander Claffy and toured with his own projects.
Weberndoerfer is often praised for his expressive, intricate playing style, drawing inspiration from European classical music, Gypsy traditions and a deep love for the American Songbook. His compositions explore rich, colorful soundscapes without adhering to stylistic limitations. His latest album, Tides, showcases his inventive song structures and strong melodic sensibilities.
Backed by a skilled rhythm section featuring bassist Richard Mikel and drummer Peter Traunmueller, Philip delivers pure tones, lyrical phrasing, and mature chord work as he navigates his harmonies. The album also features acclaimed saxophonist Dayna Stephens on five tracks, including “Simple Task,” a mid-tempo jazz instrumental with a calm, elegant melody. The track blends subtle harmonies with a laid-back groove, offering ample space for the soloists to shine.
