Saxophonist and composer Jeff Rupert pays tribute to an adventurous and historic feat on “Comanche Crush” from his latest album, It Gets Better.
Jeff Rupert is a renowned American jazz saxophonist and a distinguished professor at the University of Central Florida. With a career spanning various genres, Rupert has collaborated with jazz legends such as Maynard Ferguson, Mel Tormé, Benny Carter, and Judy Carmichael, among many others. As a bandleader, he has released several critically acclaimed albums, the latest being It Gets Better. This album features a mix of six original compositions and three thoughtfully selected jazz standards, showcasing Rupert’s versatility as both a composer and performer. The session, recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio, is enhanced by the presence of jazz heavyweights, including Kenny Barron on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums.
Rupert not only leads the ensemble but also serves as the album’s producer and arranger, imprinting his vision on every track, as he skillfully honors jazz traditions while pushing the boundaries of the genre. One standout track from the album, “Comanche Crush,” exemplifies Rupert’s dynamic range and creativity. This energetic piece is driven by rhythmic intensity, blending bebop techniques with subtle bossa nova flourishes. The composition pays homage to the record-setting transcontinental yach, which made history by crossing the Atlantic in record time. Through the music, Rupert captures the spirit of adventure, triumph and perseverance embodied by this historic feat.
