Joe Melnicove is an Israeli flute player and composer, based out of Israel and Brooklyn respectively.
A native of the northern countryside of israel, Joe started playing classical music from the age of 9, and participated in respectable projects of the classical orientation such as the Young Israeli Philharmonic, and masterclass by the legendary Yossi Arenheim(formerly principal flutist of the Israeli Philharmonic). In high school, Joe had grown an interest in improvised music, and began studying jazz music. After completing his mandatory military service in the IDF, Joe went on to study in the prestigious Rimon Jazz Institute program, and later graduated with his BFA from the Berklee College of music(Boston), where he met his mentor and now musical partner George Garzone. Joe had since moved to Israel and completed his MFA from the Jerusalem Academy of music and dance, and had been residing in Israel and Brooklyn, NY off and on.
Joe has collaborated with musicians such as the late Ralph Peterson, Jr., George Garzone, Louis Cole, Anat Fort, Avishai Cohen(trumpet), Ben Solomon, Itai Kriss, Sefi Zisling, Yonatan Albalak, Billy Hart, Ben Street, Jerry Bergonzi, and more.
Joe’s debut album(release date August 9th, 2023, 577 Records) ‘YOU IS YOU’ features original compositions alongside George Garzone, Ben Street, Billy Hart, and Jerry Bergonzi.
Joe’s musical style is inspired by jazz greats such as Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman, alongside a heavy classical music influence by composers like Debussy, Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Part, and more.
Joe’s flute playing has been described as heavy sounding, Dark, both clean and dirty at the same time, and an approach to improvisation which is a combination of his jazz and western classical influences.
Joe is the recipient of the NFA’s(National Flute Association, USA) first prize 2022 Jazz Artist.
In Israel, Joe leads several bands of his music and performs in venues such as Beit Haamudim, Hateiva, Levontin 7, and has played in the Tel Aviv Jazz festival, Jerusalem Jazz festival, and more.
