Ivan Mazuze: Composer, Saxophonist, and World Jazz Artist
Ivan Mazuze is an award-winning composer, saxophonist, and world jazz artist originally from Mozambique, now based in Norway. His music is a captivating fusion of African traditions, jazz, and global influences, which he has showcased on stages worldwide.
Mazuze began his musical journey at Mozambique’s National Music School, studying classical piano before transitioning to jazz and woodwinds. He later pursued advanced studies in jazz and ethnomusicology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where he earned an honors degree in Jazz and Composition, and a master’s in Ethnomusicology. His deep understanding of music and culture extends to his published writings on music and trance in ritual practices.
Mazuze has released several critically acclaimed albums, starting with *Maganda* (2009), a reflection of his African and jazz influences. His follow-up albums, *Ndzuti* (2012), *Ubuntu* (2015), *Moya* (2018), and the latest *Penuka* (2024), explore the dynamic intersections between traditional African rhythms and modern jazz improvisation, often drawing inspiration from diverse musical traditions, including Arabic and Indian influences. His work has been recognized internationally, earning nominations and awards at prestigious music festivals and competitions, including the South African Music Awards (SAMA) and the Mozambique Music Awards.
Throughout his career, Mazuze has performed at top international festivals such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Oslo Jazz Festival, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and Havana International Jazz Festival, Tromsø Jazz Fesamong many others. He has also collaborated with renowned artists such as Bugge Wesseltoft, Omar Sosa, Hermeto Pascoal, Jamala, Manou Gallo, Jimmy Dludlu, Jonathan Butler and many more.
In addition to his performances, Mazuze plays an active role in promoting and nurturing global jazz culture. He has been instrumental in organizing International Jazz Day events in Norway and Mozambique, and serves as a cultural consultant and mentor for various arts institutions. He is also involved in several key advisory and leadership roles in Norway’s music scene, including positions at the Arts Council Norway, Cosmopolite Scene, and the Norwegian Jazz Forum.
Mazuze’s work as a composer has been supported by multiple grants from the Norwegian Composer’s Association, Oslo Municipality, and Arts Council Norway. His commissioned piece *Penuka*, premiered in 2024, is a testament to his artistic vision and commitment to blending diverse cultural influences.
