Toronto-based saxophonist and composer Brodie West has steadily been gaining visibility both for his own projects such as Eucaylptus and his eponymous quintet, as well as his collaborations with the likes of the Ex, Getatchew Mekurya and Han Bennink. “Fortunes” is the debut album from his duo Ways, and foregrounds a stark introverted dimension of his work. The release follows the duo’s appearance at the Newcastle Jazz and Improvised Music with special guest Achim Kaufmann. Here they welcome another guest pianist Simon Toldam—a fellow Bennink collaborator—whose glistening metallic resonances punctuate the dream-like flow of their hovering polyrhythms.
