Artist Biography

Known in the jazz world for the past five decades, Ed Johnson’s versatility spans classical, Brazilian, R&B, jazz, Afro-Cuban, and rock genres, crafting vibrant contemporary jazz with intricate harmony vocal and horn arrangements. He’s likened to vocalists Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Kenny Rankin, and Michael Franks, while his guitar work draws comparison to Airto and Flora Purim. With seven recording projects and producer credits, Johnson’s impact extends beyond performance. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, he tours the West Coast regularly with NOVO TEMPO and CABIN FEVER NORTHWEST. Johnson has also taught private lessons in both guitar and voice at Gryphon Stringed Instruments for the past 30 years.
