This is a portrait of young women in a world on fire – a love story unfolding against troubled currents, with desire burning at the heart of chaos. De l’autre côté [On the other side], Laura Cahen’s new album, will be released on January 24th via PIAS France. Recorded at Mike Lindsay’s seaside studio in Margate, a coastal town in the UK, the album was shaped by the sounds of seagulls, waves, and cliffs. Drawing on influences from Joni Mitchell, Big Thief and Brigitte Fontaine, Laura blends French chanson with 70’s leaning indie-folk and jazz in a lush, organic sound, created in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Josephine Stephenson. The album’s deeply poetic lyrics reflect Laura’s passion for female empowerment, LGBTQIA+ rights, and environmental justice, all framed within a cinematic, apocalyptic narrative of two women escaping a burning world in search of freedom and love.
“De l’autre côté is a journey”, Laura Cahen reflects. “I imagined a world not too far from ours, burning from all sides, in which bombs fall continuously, climate crisis is at its peak and governments are more conservative and oppressive than ever. In this world, two women fall madly in love and must leave the city in search for a place where their love could have a chance to prosper.”
