Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, and Polygraph, a publication for thoughtful, data-driven storytelling, launched “The Universe of Miles Davis,” on May 26, to mark the trumpeter’s 90th birthday.
“The Universe of Miles Davis” is a website that visualizes the ongoing cultural importance of the great jazz artist. It is built from data collated from over 2,000 Wikipedia pages in the English language that mention his name.
According to the website’s home page, only 10% of its dataset derives from Davis’ own Wikipedia page. Along with stunning visuals and animations constructing charts, graphs and interactive models, “The Universe of Miles Davis” reveals the impact of Davis’ works, that extends beyond music and into the world of fashion, film, politics, fine art, popular culture, social media and more.
