Jack DeJohnette, Ravi Coltrane and Matthew Garrison to release ECM album

Drummer, pianist and composer Jack DeJohnette’s new album In Movement will be released on ECM Records on May 6.

The record also marks the debut of saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and bassist Matthew Garrison on ECM. DeJohnette famously played with both men’s fathers some fifty years ago. The trio pays homage to both of them, through their distinctive treatment of John Coltrane’s Civil Rights Era elegy “Alabama,” while the original composition “The Two Jimmy’s” nods doubly to fellow innovators Jimmy Garrison and Jimi Hendrix.

Also featured in the album is the trio’s version of the impressionistic “Blue in Green” by Miles Davis and Bill Evans – DeJohnette was among the very few to have played in the bands of both men – while, the original composition “Rashied” salutes the late free jazz drummer Rashied Ali.
