Guitarist, composer and arranger Avinoam Ettun continues to craft his unique musical language on his latest release, Searching for Colors.
Jerusalem-born, New York City-based guitarist, composer and arranger Avinoam Ettun is making an increasingly significant impact on today’s creative music scene. Turning heads with his distinctive approach, Ettun blends impressionistic textures, jazz improvisation and vibrant orchestration. His work also draws much influence from his dynamic collaborations with animators, filmmakers and musicians from various genres, fueling his imagination and multifaceted musical explorations.
Ettun’s latest EP, Searching for Colors, represents a further evolution in his quest to develop a unique musical language, a pursuit influenced by such wide-ranging greats as Alexander Scriabin, Bill Evans, Hank Mobley and Claude Debussy. The record showcases a rich and dynamic sound, capturing the full spectrum of human emotion by combining the electric guitar with elements of chamber music. Its tracks are intricately crafted, alternating improvised sections alongside strictly written and orchestrated moments, featuring string quartets, horns and a rhythm section, all working together to create a mesmerizing dreamscape.
Ettun’s approach to composition is deeply personal and unorthodox. “I never write near the guitar,” he explains in an official statement, shedding light on his creative process. “I compose near the piano and try to stay true to the sounds in my head. Sometimes, I hear a whole orchestra.” This method allows him to translate the music he imagines into complex, richly textured pieces that transcend traditional genre boundaries.
