“Jazz: America’s Gift” by Richie Gerber wins Kirkus Reviews honor

By Matt Micucci

Richie Gerber’s original take on the history of jazz has been called a must have for all jazz enthusiasts.

Jazz: America’s Gift is the debut book by Richie Gerber and was named as one of the Best Indie Books of 2015 by America’s celebrated journal of book reviews, Kirkus Reviews.

In Jazz: America’s Gift, Gerber draws from his unique perspective as an accomplished musician, comedian, impresario, and George Gershwin scholar. The book delves into the rich and storied history of American jazz—from its roots in early American folk song and the blues into the sound and splendor of the Jazz Age.

Not just another history book, Jazz: America’s Gift is a unique and engaging exploration of the musical styles, traditions, innovations, and incredible talents that shaped jazz, and exposes how jazz itself shaped America’s history, bringing the country closer together.

Kirkus review has said of the book that “Rather than taking a dry, academic approach to the subject, Gerber, a musician and natural foods entrepreneur, writes in a conversational, lively, and witty style.”

Complementing the witty, engaging narrative of Jazz: America’s Gift is the signature artwork of the celebrity artist Miguel Covarrubias.

As well as the Kirkus Reviews Best Indie Books of 2015 literary honor, Gerber has been receiving additional critical acclaim for Jazz: America’s Gift by The Midwest Book Review, that has called it a ‘must’ for all jazz enthusiasts and Publisher’s Weekly, that said “Gerber’s deft, energetic examination of Gershwin’s music . . . illuminates the enormous Jewish contribution to the great American musical export, jazz.”
